Bruidsnacht / Bridal Night

Ballad written by my father, performed live by the Flemish folk band “Laïs” 2014. With lyrics and English subtitles.

Bridal Night

Then to the dune she’s gone
Her wedding dress put on
Waves they go to and fro
Stars ready glow

Lonesome in deaden deep
Her tune wakes him from sleep
Waves they go to and fro
Darken the tide

From sea he came to land
He took her by the hand
Waves they go to and fro
Stars ready glow

Darken dune, Darken dune
Bright stars all ready glow
They rest eternally
bound they flow

And there in fragrant green
Became his Bridal Queen
Waves they go to and fro
Darken the tide

He made her company
Back to the flaming sea
Waves they go to and fro
Stars ready glow

Darken dune, Darken dune
right stars all ready glow
They rest eternally
Mm mm.. bound they flow  (x2)

Bruidsnacht

Zij is naar ’t duin gegaan
Haar bruidskleed had zij aan
Baren gaan heen en weer
Sterren staan klaar

Eenzaam in doods gebied
Ontwaakt hij en hoort haar lied
Baren gaan heen en weer
Donker is ’t tij

Hij kwam uit zee naar ’t strand
Hij nam haar bij de hand
Baren gaan heen en weer
Sterren staan klaar

Donker duin, Donker duin
Sterren staan helder klaar
Zij rusten eeuwig… Bij elkaar

Toen in dat geurend kruid
Werd zij ’n gekroonde bruid
Baren gaan heen en weer
Donker is ’t tij

Hij nam haar met zich mee
Terug naar de brandende zee
Baren gaan heen en weer
Sterren staan klaar

Donker duin, Donker duin
Sterren staan helder klaar
Zij rusten eeuwig
Mm mm… Bij elkaar (x2)

Silent Songs

Mira 090

I know that oceans are,
(let’s keep in touch)
I know that oceans are,
I know,
that’s how I know you know me,
I know,
although we never touched,
no hands, no waving,
no murmur soft
in passing by,
only with eyes,
singing silent songs
but even then I know,
I know you know me
There is a sun to greet and
in these nights, when all have
gone to sleep, we are awake,
singing silent songs
that’s how we keep in touch
that’s how I know you know me,
I feel your breath hovering
around a crescent moon,
those clouds can’t hardly
cover all our longing,
paradise,
and in the meantime,
I know you know me,
I know you knew me then,
as waves left free on beaches
to linger for a while,
singing silent songs
and then the sand,
the pebbled shore,
it testifies of longing,
the hunger taken in
and shared,
I know you know me
I know you won’t forget
I keep on walking beaches,
to linger for a while,
singing silent songs
that’s how we keep in touch
I know that oceans are
(let’s keep in touch)
I know that oceans are

Tides

Rainbow 003

I have seen tides high and low
and I have seen the people in between,
I have seen beaches rocked and stoned,
while others then were soft and clean,
O, were they sweet!
A tidal fragrance left there,
a reminder of times in between,
I’ve seen the rich, I’ve seen the poor,
I’ve seen the saint, I’ve seen the whore,
I’ve seen them live, I’ve seen them die,
I’ve seen how tides came high and low,
I’ve seen the mists, I’ve seen the rain,
I’ve seen how moons came down to bleed
while suns came back to dry up all this greed,
but never was there any grief
for those who lived here in between,
who with a dying murmur testified
of tidal fragrance left now rocked
and stoned, the blue reminder
of times that came here in between.

Whales

whale 1

The Whales are crying out,
O ~ the flocks, the flocks of
seagulls gather, while high
above the clouds are darkening
The Whales are crying out,
it is the rain and not the Sun
that’s driving them away from
their homeland in the Deep Blue
Sea
The Whales are crying out,
their songs echo the craving for
that  long forgotten  melody
from Stars only to dream about.
The whales are crying out
while I am walking all those
beaches that mingled with the
blood of ages, and I freeze
[O tune, O healing tune I need You]
The Whales are crying out,
but faintly through their pain,
they know one silent sunray
shall suffice to lit their eye,
remebrance of a distant echo,
that distant murmur of horizons dear
the echo of the Promised Land
that Paradise where all in tune
are One
Listen, Listen: that’s why
the Whales are crying out.
