Bridal Night ~ Bruidsnacht

This is a beautiful ballad by the famous Flemish folk group Laïs. They sing in Dutch and composed the song using a poem by my father Ferdinand Vercnocke (1906-1989), painter and poet of the sea. For my English readers I translated the lyrics in a way they fit to the music, so you can sing along if you like. Perhaps in time I will make adjustments. It’s not so easy to make a translation that both matches the original lyrics & music, but I tried. Enjoy!

Bruidsnacht                             Bridal Night

Zij is naar ‘t duin gegaan                  And to the dune she’s gone
Haar bruidskleed had zij aan         Her bridal dress put on
Baren gaan heen en weer                 Waves they go to and fro
Sterren staan klaar                             Stars ready glow

Eenzaam in doods gebied                Lonesome in deaden deep
Ontwaakt hij en hoort haar lied    Her tune wakes him from sleep
Baren gaan heen en weer                 Waves they go to and fro
Donker is ‘t tij                                       Darken the tide

Hij kwam uit zee naar ‘t strand      From sea he came to land
Hij nam haar bij de hand                  He took her by the hand
Baren gaan heen en weer                 Waves they go to and fro
Sterren staan klaar                             Stars ready glow

Donker duin                                          Darken dune
Donker duin                                          Darken dune
Sterren staan helder klaar               Bright stars all ready glow
Zij rusten eeuwig                                 They rest eternally
Bij elkaar                                                Bound they flow

Toen in dat geurend kruid              And there in fragrant green
Werd zijn gekroonde bruid            Became  his Bridal Queen
Baren gaan heen en weer                 Waves they go to and fro
Donker is ‘t tij                                       Darken the tide

Hij nam haar met zich mee             He made her company
Terug naar de brandende zee        Back to the flaming sea
Baren gaan heen en weer                 Waves they go to and fro
Sterren staan klaar                             Stars ready glow

Donker duin                                          Darken dune
Donker duin                                          Darken dune
Sterren staan helder klaar              Bright stars all ready glow
Zij rusten eeuwig                                 They rest eternally
Mm mm… Bij elkaar                          Mm mm.. bound they flow

Donker duin                                          Darken dune
Donker duin                                          Darken dune
Sterren staan helder klaar              Bright stars all ready glow
Zij rusten eeuwig                                 They rest eternally
Mm mm… Bij elkaar                          Mm mm.. bound they flow

Abundancy

Rilke

I cannot be but grateful for the Love
so poured abundantly into my Soul,
the way You keep on pouring is as
boundless as the Sea, even when
darkness is surrounding me, still
You keep pouring, even when I’m
at a loss for words Your Silence is
a beacon, I can rest assured, O yes,
I cannot be but grateful for the Love
so poured abundantly into my Soul,
when storms are roaring, when on
my way all doors are closing, when
nowhere is a refuge to be found, my
little lamp consumed, and to the rim
my cup is filled, still You keep pouring,
O yes, I cannot be but grateful for the
Love You pour abundantly  into my Soul.

The Sea Door

There is a door no one can see
it only opens for the blind
should you then stumble in
forget about the way that
took you here: behind it
unfolds insight in the mystery,
and when the time has come
then you will know the only
challenge was the one within,
to enter without entering, to
love the one and leave, a kiss,
a promise of the way beyond.

Lighthouse

A lighthouse be,
mirror the beauty
of that inward eye,
echo the silence and
become the sea, turn,
return, a beacon be,
reflect the answer,
come with me,
to any ship then
you will be as is
to time eternity

Sea Of Soul ~ SOS

As waves are to the sea so time is to
the mind: moments come and go, then
come again, and if we try to hold them,
and cherish what they offer they just
go again, but always something then
is left behind, not for the eye to see
but for the Heart to feel, and finally,
when we stop wondering where all
this is coming from, we are ready to
receive, our eyes then open, as time
is to the mind and waves are to the sea,
so Love is to our Soul, eventually.
